The massive consent decree outlining the Superfund cleanup in Butte has finally been made available to the public. It’s now time find out where the public to learn what’s in this big plan.
“Our goal is educate and inform for these two weeks to make sure the everybody has the opportunity to learn as much about it as they so choose,” said Butte Superfund Coordinator Jon Sesso.
The decree can be found on the Butte Silver Bow Website. Hard copies of the plan will also be available at the Butte Library’s main branch and the one in the mall, also in the Butte Courthouse in the Law Library.
There will also be nine public sessions at local businesses and public buildings in Butte explaining what’s in the plan. Sesso says there’s more to the plan than just cleaning up mine contamination.
“We’re going to get an awful lot of the amenities that the public wants to see in the corridor that is our Silver Bow Creek drainage,” said Sesso.
The decree is a big document, there’s a lot to digest and that’s why Sesso says it’s important for the public to come out and find out what’s finally been put in this plan. A plan he believes will be good for Butte.
“We’ve got answers to the questions that the public has raised these many years, so we’re anxious to answer the questions we’ve heard, and tell them why this proposed plan is in the best interest and will result in a first-rate solution and a first-rate cleanup,” said Sesso.
The first public meeting will be Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Park and Main Café.
