HELENA – The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has named a new director for the Montana VA Health Care System.

Leaders say Judy Hayman will start as director within the next 45 to 60 days. She will oversee more than 1,200 staff members at veterans’ health sites around Montana, including the Fort Harrison VA hospital in Helena and 12 outpatient community clinics.

Hayman was most recently the medical center director at the Syracuse VA Medical Center in Syracuse, New York. She previously worked in leadership at the VA medical center in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Hayman will replace the Montana VA’s previous director, Dr. Kathy Berger. The agency announced last month that Berger would leave to become director of the Chillicothe VA Medical Center in Ohio.

The Montana VA serves more than 47,000 enrolled veterans across the state. Leaders say it is geographically the largest VA service area in the lower 48 states, at about 147,000 square miles.
