The Great Montana Shakeout was held across the state Thursday.

The annual event is held every year at this time for organizations, schools, and businesses to participate in earthquake drills and what they will do if or when the earth starts shaking.

Earthquakes are nearly impossible to predict, which is why Gallatin County, Director of Emergency Management Patrick Lonergan urges everyone to take some time and learn what you need to do when things start to shake.

“Stop, drop, and hold on,” Lonergan said. “They want you to get on your knees, cover your head, and try and get under some heavy furniture or someplace that will protect you if stuff falls over and hold on until the shaking stops and try and get to a safe place.”

Lonergan urges that everyone have a plan in place for what they will do before and after if an earthquake occurs.
