BUTTE - U.S. District Judge Sam Haddon has approved Butte's consent decree, which outlines a more than $150 million project to clean up mine waste off the Butte hill and remove its designation as a Superfund site.
City leaders say this is a major step in a process that has been ongoing for 30 years.
“It’s a day to go down in the history books, really, that we're going to move forward past the Superfund stigma, finally, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” said Butte Chief Executive Dave Palmer.
The cleanup project could take at least five years to complete.
