BUTTE – After millions of dollars in restoration, Butte’s Stodden Park is ready to shine this summer.

“You see a lot of dirt here right now, but in the next couple weeks you’re going to see it all filled up with grass and all the landscaping completed here,” said Parks and Recreation Director JP Gallagher.

The $1 million playground is complete, along with a second entranceway to the park. In total, about $5 million in improvements have been made.

“Now we’re just putting the finishing touches on the rest of the park. The tennis courts and everything are all finished, the plaza here with all the hardscape things, we’re just waiting to get the landscaping down,” said Gallagher.

The $8 million taxpayer-funded pool will open for its second season this Saturday, June 8. Officials believe the park will attract plenty of attention.

“The byproduct, I think people around the state are seeing what a great park this is and it’s bringing people in to see what we have here, so that excites us as well,” said Gallagher.

And park officials say this multi-million dollar project could not have happened without the generosity of many private donors.

“The rest of the upgrades were given as a generous donation from the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation and Montana Resources and without them, this park won’t be having the upgrades that we had,” said Gallagher.

There will be a ceremonial ribbon cutting at 1 p.m. on June 18 at Stodden Park, which is currently open to the public.
