Butte police warn about phone scam claiming relative is in jail

BUTTE, Mont. – Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement is warning local citizens about a phone scam claiming a person’s relative is in jail.

Sheriff Ed Lester sent out a release Friday night that said Butte people have been reporting a phone call from a long distance number indicating that a relative is in jail. The caller asks that bail money is sent to an address in New York in order to bail out the relative.

Lester said this is a common scam and advises not to send any personal or financial information to unknown callers. He said anyone with questions can contact law enforcement at 497-1120.
