BUTTE – Firefighters responded to a structure fire in the 800 block of B Street near the intersection of Johns Avenue about 15 minutes after the noon hour Wednesday.

This fire was reported by an off-duty firefighter who happened to be driving in the area and saw the heavy smoke coming from the residence.

“When the first engine arrived the whole residence was charged with smoke, they made an entry and knocked down the main body of fire, but we still have fire up in the attic, so we’ve got to pull a lot of ceiling. It’s got a metal roof on it so it’s difficult to access,” said Butte Fire Chief Jeff Miller.

Miller praised the alertness of the off-duty firefighter who noticed the smoke and was able to pinpoint the exact location.

“You know, firefighters are always on duty, they’re always alert, always aware of their situations, surroundings, he was obviously alert to see, he probably saved a lot of time by seeing it sooner,” said Miller.

The chief said the homeowners have been notified about the fire and adds that, while all fires are tragic, it’s especially so this time of year.

“It’s a tough deal, anytime, this time of year, it’s tough when someone loses their home, very difficult,” he said.

No one was injured in the fire and it remains under investigation Wednesday.
