BUTTE – Accidents have become a familiar sight this week on the highways in the Butte area with the cold, snowy weather blowing through town. It’s been especially treacherous on Homestake Pass.

“We had several in a row when the snow started falling on the pass. We had a couple semis on the pass either slide off or jackknifed up on the road that helped close the road down for a while,” said Butte Undersheriff George Skuletich.

Roads in Butte were also very slick.

“With the temperatures getting down to 10 degrees it really iced up the roads in town. We had four accidents on the way to work this morning, I believe,” said Skuletich.

Motorists are reminded that icy roads can make travel dangerous for anyone, no matter what you drive.

“Cars don’t stop, just because you’ve got four-wheel drive doesn’t mean you’re going to stop. They’re usually a heavier vehicle and they’re going to slide more so you’ve got to give more room to stop whether it’s a stop sign or a car in front of you,” said Skuletich.

With all the construction going on the highway, these big trucks rolling through and the freezing temperatures, police say just slow down when you get out on the highway.

“Give yourself more distance between the car in front of you because you’re at high speeds and also pass with care. When you’re passing vehicles, a lot of snow flies and visibility goes down,” the undersheriff said.

No serious injuries were reported in these accidents.
