BUTTE – A mailer encouraging them to absentee vote perplexed many registered voters in Silver Bow County.

“They’re really confused, they’re upset and many people are like, ‘why are you doing this?’ we’re not doing this,” said Clerk and Recorder Sally Hollis.

Staff at the Clerk and Recorder’s office were inundated with hundreds of phone calls this week from registered voters who thought their status had changed.

“ We have five people on phones answering questions continuously on the application on the application, people are calling saying ‘I thought I was on the list already.’ You are,” said Hollis.

The mailer is paid for by the New American Jobs Fund, a D.C.-based group claiming to fight for middle class and pushing people to register as absentee voters in Ohio, Arizona, Nevada, and Montana.

“This is not coming from the secretary of state or the clerk and recorders,” she said.

The Clerk and Records Officer want the public to know that if you were eligible to vote last spring, you’re eligible to vote this fall, so if you get this flier in the mail just tear it up and ignore it.

“And I just want our citizens to know, throw it away, if you voted in June, just throw it away,” said Hollis.

The Clerk and Records Office is mailing out all absentee ballots on Oct. 11th, so all voters registered to vote absentee should receive their ballots by mail shortly after that.
