Coroner identifies man who died in shooting with Bozeman Police officers

The family of Michael Rogel told MTN through a representative that Rogel was not schizophrenic.

BOZEMAN — The Park County Coroner has identified 39-year-old Michael L. Rogel of Bozeman as the man who died on Monday, April 3, 2023, during an incident that led to a shooting involving five Bozeman Police officers.

The incident occurred at 259 Greenmore Court in Bozeman, according to a press release.

The release said the incident remains under investigation by the Montana Department of Justice Criminal Investigation Division, the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office and the Park County Coroner’s Office.

On Tuesday, MTN News spoke with Trent Rhodes, a friend of Rogel's who said Rogel suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and believes the incident was due to a mental health episode.

A man is dead after brandishing a firearm and engaging in a shooting with Bozeman Police officers on Monday, April 3, 2023.

According to a Bozeman Police Department press release, officers responded to a disturbance call on Bungalow Lane in Bozeman around 1:12 p.m. on Monday.

The man was allegedly carrying a shotgun and said people were on their way to kill him. He left the area in a vehicle as officers responded and relocated to the Greenmore Court area.

The press release said the man produced a firearm as officers approached his vehicle, leading to a shooting with five Bozeman Police officers involved.

The man was found dead after the shooting. None of the officers involved were injured.

Bozeman PD says the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation is investigation, per department protocol, with assistance from the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office.
