Update 11:15 a.m.
The standoff early Tuesday at a residence in the Billings Heights started at 3:49 a.m. when officers responded to a weapons complaint in the 400 block of Jerrie Lane, police said in a press release issued late Tuesday morning.
It was reported that gunshots were heard in the area and believed to be coming from a camper. Officers who responded also heard gunshots coming from that area, the press release states.
The initial investigation indicated there was one person inside a residence firing multiple rounds. Billings police officers, Yellowstone County SWAT, drone, and negotiators were called to the scene.
Negotiations with the suspect continued until approximately 7:22 a.m. when the suspect came out of the residence. Once outside, the suspect followed commands and was taken into custody.
The suspect, who police identified as 53-year-old William Van Meter of Billings, was evaluated for any injuries and mental health concerns. He faces possible charges of criminal endangerment and assault on a peace officer.
Detectives remained at the scene through the morning.

Update 7:30 a.m.
Police said the suspect has been arrested "without incident" and the area is "open and no danger to the public."
Jerrie Lane remains blocked to traffic as officers clear the scene.
Police said further information will be released later Tuesday.

Update 6:55 a.m.
Police said shortly before 6 a.m. that the incident is still ongoing and travel is closed on Jerrie and Jaque lanes, but Lake Elmo Drive and Main Street are open.
Police said that schools in the area are not affected.

BILLINGS - Billings police were responding to a shooting outside a residence early Tuesday morning.
Police posted on social media shortly after 5 a.m. that a suspect was barricaded and "actively shooting outside a residence" in the 400 block of Jerrie Lane.
"Please stay away from the area," the social post states. "Heavy Law Enforcement presence. SWAT and Negotiators on scene. Residents in the area please shelter in place. Incident is ongoing."
