Tom Morgan Remembered | Winston Rod Bonus | Under the Big Sky

Tom Morgan moved the R.L. Winston Rod Company to Montana in 1976 shortly after purchasing the San Francisco based business from Doug Merrick. Tom’s tenure at Winston led to the development of some of the greatest rod designs in the companies history.

Now, nearly a year since renowned fly rod maker Tom Morgan passed away, his legacy and his influence is still felt at the Winston Rod Company. This week under the big sky, Annette McLean, V.P. of Operations and Design at Winston, reflects on her own experiences with Tom and his influence on her own career.

Winston Rod has been a pioneer in the fly rod industry for since 1929. From hollow-fluted bamboo development and record-shattering distance casting rods Winston rods carry a strong heritage. The company has continued to innovate with the early use of materials such as fiberglass and graphite. Pioneering, harnessing and refining the unmatched power and performance of boron/graphite composite. These are just a few examples of how, for nearly ninety years, Winston has been responsible for some of the most groundbreaking advances in fly fishing.

The world-class rod maker is located in the small Montana town of Twin Bridges, which lies at the confluence of the Ruby, Beaverhead and Big Hole Rivers which form the Jefferson River. The small Montana town is a well-known fly fishing mecca.
